Acrostic Poems!

To celebrate National Poetry Month, our class learned how to write acrostic poems. Acrostic poems are formed when the writer uses the letters in a word to begin each line of the poem. All lines of the poem are related to or describe the main topic word. The main topic word that I chose to use for our class was the word, spring.

Patten Free Library Trip!

Each year, our first graders get to visit the Patten Free Library. On this trip, they learn about the history of the public library, explore and learn about various parts of the library and get to earn their very own library card. The students truly enjoy this trip each year.

 

Snow much fun in first grade!

With our abundance of snow this year, our first graders have had the opportunity to explore and have fun during our recess times with the snow.  Here are some pictures from a few of their adventures.

Maine Wildlife Park

This past Tuesday, the entire first grade from Dike-Newell School got to attend the Maine Wildlife Park. It is an amazing trip that correlates with the essential question, "How do animals prepare for winter?" The students loved learning which animals hibernate, migrate and adapt during the winter months.

L.O.C.A.L. Garden

This past September, my first graders got to enjoy the L.O.C.A.L. Garden where they learned about various vegetables and got to pick carrots!

Thorne Head Preserve

Today, our first grade class went on our spring field trip to Thorn Head Preserve right here in Bath. The generous Kennebec Estuary Land Trust organized and conducted the trip. They provided the students with a hike along the preserve where they learned about the life cycles of several animals such as the dragonfly, mallard duck, garter snake and green frog. They also assisted the students in a exploratory project by the pond where students were taught the difference between invertebrates and vertebrates and explored the pond for these animals. The field trip was a great success!
