How can I tell the differences between a solid, liquid, and gas?

This past week, our friends continued their learning about matter. They completed a experiment where they had to first predict which of the following items had the most matter and then continued to explore how much each of the items weighed using the pan balance. With the pan balance they discovered which item has the most matter to which item has the least matter. Students truly enjoyed this experiment.
